OVERVIEW
As a student of and advocate for sustainability, Dan Kahane believes that local government has a duty to provide safe and sound spaces in which we can live and work, now and in the future. He feels there is also an obligation to provide environmentally responsible economic opportunities favoring local businesses.
BACKGROUND
Dan Kahane has worked as an environmental professional for the past 20 years. He was green before green was fashionable. He has worked with marked success in the public, private and non-profit sectors of the environmental “industry.” Dan holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Geography from the University of California.
Dan is a tireless advocate for environmental awareness and protection. He was recognized by the California Science Teachers Association (2002) and the National Science Teachers Association (2004) as a Distinguished Environmental Educator. He has served as Vice-President on the Board of Directors of the Madrone Audubon Society, and worked for three years on the staff of the National Audubon Society as a Bilingual Urban Environmental Specialist. Dan has demonstrated a strong commitment to maintaining and improving the health of our communities. He has the practical experience to get the job done.
As an Environmental Planner and Project Manager (Engineering Service Corporation, 1988-1991), he prepared and published environmental impact reports and facilitated coordination among local, state and federal agencies.
Since 1997, Dan has worked as a Water Programs Specialist with the Sonoma County Water Agency. He designs and continues to develop and implement water education and watershed awareness programs that reach thousands of Sonoma County students and their teachers. Dan is an active member of Service Employees International Union (SEIU Local 1021).
Dan Kahane is a highly effective communicator. He is fluent in Spanish, conversant in German and French, and is currently studying Japanese.
Dan is committed to maintaining a balanced and healthy life. To that end, he runs a small truck farm (Graton Greens) where he grows produce for the Sebastopol Farm Market and local restaurants. He is also an accomplished professional musician and performer, and has numerous recording credits. In his spare time, Dan teaches music and practices Aikido, the Japanese martial art of non-violent conflict resolution.
Dan Kahane knows that a healthy environment combined with a robust local economy makes for a healthy community. Dan will work with and for all of us here in Sonoma County. He will be a powerful, persuasive, and knowledgeable voice in local government.
